IHSD REGISTRAR DELIVERS LECTURE AT THE UNVEILING OF THE NATIONAL POLICY ON INCLUSIVE VOLUNTEERISM BY THE PRESIDENCY

The Registrar of the Institute for Humanitarian Studies and Social Development (IHSD), Dr. Prince Francis Origa, on Thursday, 6th May, 2021, delivered a lecture on “The Role of Volunteerism in National Development”, at the one-day sensitization workshop organized by the Nigerian National Volunteer Service (NNVS) department, Political and Economic Affairs office under the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) for government officials at the federal level with the theme; “Promoting and Harnessing the Potentials of Nigerians for National Development through Volunteerism”, in Abuja.

Dr. Francis Origa who also doubles as the Special Adviser to the Governor of Abia State on Humanitarian Affairs, NGO Management and Social Development while delivering his lecture gave the history of Volunteerism as a culture that had already been entrenched into most African tradition, especially in collective community development efforts as practiced in most African clans, particularly in Igbo land. “Though regrettably this culture has not been formally recognized as part of our existential attribute but this policy is a way to reinforce this culture”, he said.

Speaking further, Dr. Origa went on to state the benefits of Volunteerism to the individuals and the Nation at large, as the alarming level of unemployment in Nigeria has left us with no other option than to think towards this direction of creating a platform of inclusiveness.

During the event, Dr. Francis Origa joined other dignitaries to unveil the Policy as a road map for Nigeria.

Recall that in December 2020, President Muhammadu Buhari signed this Policy of inclusive Volunteerism, thus making Nigeria one of the few African Nations with practical political commitment to Volunteerism.

Institute for Humanitarian Studies and Social Development (IHSD) was one of the organizations that took the lead role among many MDAs, CSOs and Media organization.

A member of the Institute was also appointed by the Civil Society Organizations on attendance to chart the course of partnership between NNVS and CSOs.

It is worthy of note to state here that the Institute for Humanitarian Studies and Social Development (IHSD) has been in the vanguard of promoting the culture of Humanitarianism and Volunteerism as Value System in Nigeria. This for the past five years has remained the Institute’s theme for her Annual Humanitarian Public.
