In the area of community-humanitarian support service, IHSD has collaborated with the office of the Secretary to the Abia State Government in 2011 to conduct vulnerability assessment, mobilize resources and development partners to support vulnerable community (Eze-Ukwu) in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State which had a Cholera outbreak that killed children and women. We have equally supported economic empowerment of vulnerable youth, women and children in partnership with Advocate for Youth and Health Development; while we have supported the capacities of NGOs in Abia, Enugu, Rivers State, Lagos and Gombe State on how best to identify vulnerability and design economic empowerment cum entrepreneurship programs.

Our Story

The Institute for Humanitarian Studies and Social Development was established in 2008 and formally launched in August 12, 2010, to complement the efforts of the Government and the United Nations by promoting and encouraging volunteerism, professionalism, intellectualism, skilled man-power, values and integrity in the Humanitarian and Non Profit sector in Nigeria and beyond.

The Institute is duly registered in Nigeria and approved by the Federal Ministry of Education to carry out research, train and develop the capacities of individuals, CSOs and Government MDAs amongst others, thus enhancing programmatic and managerial competence in the humanitarian cum development sector.
With over a decade of experience in the promotion of the culture of humanitarianism and capacity building, the institute partners with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) where it is involved in joint trainings and certification.
Over the years, the institute had built the capacities of individuals, NGOs/CSOs, and have supported and collaborated with Government MDAs such as; Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, Federal Ministry of Education (NGO Unit), National Orientation Agency, NEMA, NYSC, Nigerian National Merit Award House, Border Communities Development Agency, Federal Ministry of Budget and National Planning, National Boundary Commission, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development. Over 3573 people have graduated from our NGO Management and Humanitarian Leadership Dynamics Course with functional Alumni Association and chapters spread across the federation of Nigeria.

Over the past 10 years, IHSD in association with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), has through its training program been helping individuals to build a professional career in the humanitarian cum development sector; while at the same time supporting government MDAs and relevant organizations to develop the capacities of their staff on cross-cutting humanitarian issues, thus ensuring organizational efficiency and prompt response to humanitarian challenges.

Mission Statement
To employ knowledge driven teaching, research and practical works to produce highly qualitative graduates as social development practitioners; social network; instructors and administrations of social and non-profit services.

The Institute works with intellectually competent experts as trainers, researchers and programmers drawn from among members and volunteers and as well as associates staff from various recognized higher institutions and development sector.
The Governing Council is made up of reputable men and women who have distinguished themselves in various human endeavours cum national development while the management team and National Working Committee of the Institute is led by highly renowned NGO/Humanitarian Management Specialist and United Nations International Master’s Degree Graduate.
Objectives
1. The primary objective of the Institute is to provide adequate information, knowledge and skills to those wishing to engage in, or already engaged in developmental services; through capacity building and public awareness creation cum sensitization and as well as research and publication.

2. To run professional and academic courses on humanitarian services, nonprofit and social development studies; conduct professional examinations and recruit professional members and volunteers, thereby enhancing professionalism in humanitarian services delivery.

3. To identify, honor and recognize individual philanthropists and corporate organizations and others who have distinguished themselves through their outstanding contribution to humanitarianism.

The IHSD 5 pillars are anchored on
the below thematic areas but not limited to:

  • Proficiency certificate course in humanitarian leadership dynamics and NGO management (physical and online); capacity building for individuals, government MDAs and humanitarian organizations.
  • Consultancy Services in the areas of; registration and formation of NGO, organizational profile development, policy development and board orientation, strategic work-plan development and proposal writing staff capacity strengthening, recruitment and performance appraisal.
  • Public education and celebrating humanity activities include; IHSD Annual Humanitarian Public Lecture, sensitization seminar, road walks, online awareness creation via twitter, facebook and instagram; humanitarian heroes award and humanitarian merit award; IHSD humanitarian school clubs; IHSD volunteers’ club; IHSD NYSC Camp and post camp training project.
  • Humanitarian Support Services, and Community-Economic Empowerment; IHSD partner relevant organizations and individuals to provide humanitarian support services to vulnerable persons and community facing health, educational and socio-economic injustice including; pro-bo-no legal and mediation support for women and girls who are victims of sexual and domestic abuse or other form of violence against women; securing of admission at no cost for some female Adolescent, financial support to help vulnerable girls write WAEC, JAMB and to pay off academic bills in the higher institutions in order to reduce prostitution amongst vulnerable female students.
  • To carry out community vulnerability assessment; distribute welfare packages and palliatives to vulnerable individuals including widows, widowers, children and aged people; encourage women in agriculture amongst other economic issues.
